Chapter on France

VG Rodwin
Health Politics and Policy, Cengage, Sixth Edition, 2025.

This chapter describes the French health system and in describing it helps to illuminate other systems and, in particular, the United States. The author begins by reflecting on the values embodied in French health care-liberal-pluralism and solidarity (the American system shares these values but puts more emphasis on the first). The article explains how the French system covers the population, how health insurance works in France, and how the system developed w ith the passage of time.
