UK Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg Leads Town Hall Event
Ellen Schall, dean of NYU Wagner, welcomed Nick Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister in the UK, at a lively Wagner-sponsored town hall Sept. 22, 2010.
The students asked Clegg about his opposition to the war in Iraq, and how he'd define whether his Conservative-Liberal Democratic coalition government was a success.
"I'll come back and tell you in five years" whether his experiment in British democracy has worked, said Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party.
Speaking of Clegg, Dean Schall remarked, "The deputy prime minister is not only a compelling political leader, but also exemplifies the quality of cosmopolitanism."
The event came during UN Week in New York and attracted more than 350 people to the Kimmel Center for University Life, most of them NYU students.
