Highlights from the Class of 2024 Convocation
In the storied theater of the New York City Center, graduates, loved ones, faculty, staff, and administrators gathered to celebrate at NYU’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service Convocation ceremony on Thursday, May 16. The ceremony honored the tremendous achievements of the Class of 2024, composed of graduates from programs including the Master of Public Administration, Master of Urban Planning, Master of Health Administration, Master of Science in Public Policy, Executive Master of Public Administration, and PhD in Public Administration.
The ceremony began with opening remarks from Dean of NYU Wagner Sherry Glied, who underscored the need for committed, knowledgeable, and prepared public service professionals in today’s world, quoting namesake Robert F. Wagner, who said, “Public service is the highest good, and when done honorably and well, the most rewarding.”
On behalf of the Class of 2024, Sean Pomory (MPA 2024) delivered the student address, recognizing the strengths of NYU Wagner graduates—including their commitment to challenging the status quo, their pursuit of creative ways to promote human flourishing, and their analysis of access to moral goods—and encouraging his peers to relish the moment through boisterous cheers.
Then in the Convocation Address, Carlo Ciotoli, MD, MPA, vice president of NYU Campus Health and executive director of the NYU Student Health Center, reminded graduates to acknowledge the dedication and hard work required to arrive at this moment. In discussing the importance of pursuing the path of public service, he told the Class of 2024, “Your greatest impact will be measured not by the height of your achievements, but by the depth of your compassion and the sincerity of your service to others.”
The ceremony also recognized members of the NYU Wanger community for their accomplishments and commitment to service. John Gershman was named Professor of the Year, honoring his extraordinary research and advocacy work, as well as his dedication to student growth through a number of impactful leadership roles and his deep commitment to student engagement and learning. Additionally, Rebecca Duane was recognized as the Adjunct Professor of the Year for her positive presence in the classroom and her excellence in teaching.. A number of students were also presented with awards for their remarkable academic achievements, innovative solutions to critical issues, and compassionate contributions to the NYU Wagner community.
Furthermore, six candidates from the PhD in Public Administration were ceremoniously hooded, marking an important milestone in their journeys and celebrating their unwavering commitment to scholarly research and public service.
At the close of the ceremony, graduates joyously spilled onto the streets to celebrate with their loved ones. Equipped with knowledge, purpose, and compassion, the Class of 2024 has left a lasting legacy on NYU Wagner and is poised to take on the challenges of a complex and ever-changing world and to continue to make a meaningful impact on their communities, locally and globally.
