Special Topics in Housing: Informal Settlements

URPL-GP.4636, 2 points.

Semester: Spring

Courses

In the past few months, human number seven billion was born. In addition to that amazing fact, we are now living on a planet that is over 50% urbanized. With continued rapid rates of urbanization come new challenges and opportunities for developing countries.

This course will take an in-depth look at informal settlements in the developing world – why did they form in the first place? Why do they continue to exist? What challenges and opportunities exist within them and what are communities themselves doing to improve their own living situations?

Students will enhance their knowledge base about informal settlements as well as strengthen their skills in writing a funding proposal.
