Melissa Harris-Perry

NYU Wagner and The Century Foundation co-sponsored the first of three public “Debates of the Century” before a capacity audience at the school March 8, with experts going toe-to-toe on the future of higher education and the proposition that "Public colleges should be free."

Introduced by Sherry Glied, dean of NYU Wagner, the lively and informative debate featured Sara Goldrick-Rab, professor of educational policy and sociology at University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Richard Vedder, director of the Center for College Affordability and Productivity. Keeping the discussion on track was moderator Melissa Harris-Perry, the Maya Angelou presidential chair and director of the Anna Julia Cooper Center at Wake Forest University and author of Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America.

The next debate will be held on March 29. The topic will be immigration. Stay tuned for details.
