Kate Harwood (née Hausdorff) is a doctoral candidate at NYU Wagner and a doctoral fellow at the NYU Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy.  Her research lies at the intersection of urban economics, public economics and housing policy.  Her job market paper uses a quasi-experimental design to understand how Hurricane Sandy impacted rents in affected neighborhoods and the role existing rental subsidies played in mitigating these impacts for low-income households.  She plans to expand this work to understand how the hurricane may have reshaped the composition of the population living in the neighborhoods it impacted, and how we might expect climate change to impact other rental markets beyond New York City.  In addition, she is especially interested in more fully examining how the government may be implicitly subsidizing habitation in disaster-risky areas. Prior to her doctoral work, Kate worked as a Senior Analyst at Abt Associates conducting policy-relevant research. She holds an M.S. in Economics from Tufts University and a BA in Political Science and Sociology from University of Miami.
