Student Spotlight: Aurora Brice (MPA-PNP)

What motivated you to attend Wagner, a school of public service?
I was motivated to attend NYU Wagner because I appreciated the small cohorts and how the curriculum is aligned with industry needs. As a working professional, I needed to find a program that would allow me to work and pursue my graduate degree. In addition, the students' testimonials influenced my decision to apply to NYU Wagner. Hearing students speak about how the MPA program at NYU Wagner helped them advance in their careers was very moving. Also, I have encountered NYU Wagner alumni who praised the professors' thoroughness and the encouragement they received to do well.

In addition to being a MPA student, you also work at St. Nicks Alliance. Can you share a bit about your responsibilities or projects you have worked on?
I am passionate about helping communities amplify their voices for better resources and reduce socio-economic isolation amongst students of color. I am a Bronx Global Learning Institute for Girls Charter board member. In my previous work, I supported the implementation of the Brooklyn S.T.E.A.M. Center at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, an educational hub providing Career & Technical training to high school students. As a former community board member of Central Brooklyn, I worked with other board members and elected officials to reduce the number of bars and restaurants opening in bad faith by revising the community-support application process. Also, I prevented a neighborhood hospital from closing by working with elected officials, community members, hospital workers, and union members to organize.

You are VP of Wagner Womxn, a student organization that aims to engage the Wagner community on public policies affecting womxn and gender-expansive people. What are the benefits of getting involved with the group?
Being involved with NYU Womxn allows me to continuously bring awareness to the ongoing issues that impede women's upliftment and progression. Building a sisterhood with other like-minded women committed to improving policies and services is rewarding.

What past events or initiatives organized by Wagner Womxn are you particularly proud of, and are there any upcoming activities in 2024 that you're excited about?
I am very proud of the mentorship program. The mentorship program has existed for some time, and each year, the participation grows. This year, we had 26 mentors sign up. It's refreshing to see NYU Wagner Alumni return and share their industry experience and insight with current students. We have our first kick-off meeting this semester on February 27, 2024.
