Doctoral Program
Community, Events & Resources
The doctoral program offers numerous opportunities to meet fellow doctoral
students and Wagner faculty. Some of these opportunities are social in nature.
Others are to help students strengthen their skills. Below is a list of some
activities, events and resources that have been offered in past years. Note
many of these events are cosponsored with ABD, described below.
Fall Kick Off - The program opens the academic year with an informal gathering to welcome and introduce the new students in the program.
Brown Bag Lunch Series - The program, in conjunction with ABD, sponsors several informal brown bag lunches throughout the academic year. Doctoral students are encouraged to attend, and to present their work. Announcements are posted on bulletin boards and on the listserves.
NYU Wagner Research Colloquium
- The Wagner Research Colloquium is a seminar series at which prominent researchers
present current work on pressing social issues. The presenters represent a
range of disciplines and methodological approaches, and are affiliated with
institutions from around the country. The colloquium offers doctoral students
and faculty a chance to see the latest work, discuss and debate different
approaches to research, and interact with researchers from other institutions.
It also provides doctoral students with an academic forum in which to present
their own research.
One year of for-credit registration for the colloquium series is required
of all doctoral students. However,
all doctoral students are strongly
encouraged to attend and participate in the sessions as often as possible.
Colloquium sessions meet on selected Thursdays from 4 to 5:30 pm in the Puck
Building.
Doctoral Study Carrels - There are study carrels (equipped
with computers) available for doctoral student use on the second floor of
the Puck Building, 295 Lafayette Street. The carrels can be reserved by students
for designated periods of time, or used on a sign-up or drop-in basis.
Program Bulletin Board - There is a bulletin board (as well
as binders listing job and fellowship opportunities) available in the study
carrel area on the second floor of the Puck Building. Information is updated
routinely.
Informal Study Groups - All doctoral students are encouraged
to form informal study groups, particularly to prepare for the comprehensive
exams. The program sponsors a formal study group to prepare for the
PQE.
Membership in Professional Associations and Conference Participation
- Doctoral students are encouraged to become active members of professional
associations as well as attend annual conferences. Applications to request
partial funding for conference presentations can be made to your program Assistant Director. Please review the
travel award
policy for details.
Some associations of interest include:
The Wagner Faculty are active members and leaders in these associations. Students are encouraged to discuss their own involvement with their advisors and other pertinent faculty.
Doctoral Student Association -- The Association to Benefit Doctoral Students ("ABD") is a student-run group that organizes several academic and social gatherings to provide support and a sense of community among Wagner doctoral students. Their activities include brown bag lunches, seminars, happy hours and other social events.
The mission of the Association to Benefit Doctoral Students (ABD) is to strengthen the Wagner Doctoral program; to build community among the doctoral students, Wagner faculty, administration, and alumnae and to further develop our professional and academic careers.
