11:00am-11:30am

Title: What is Mediation? What We're Up To at New York Peace Institute.

Presenter: Elizabeth Larsen

Description: Over the past 16 months, Elizabeth has become an approved mediator with the New York Peace Institute (NYPI), where she actively volunteers her time to help people resolve their conflicts. In this presentation, Elizabeth will introduce the art and science of mediation: asking questions and reflecting back to parties in conflict, while maintaining mediator neutrality, and allowing the parties to be self-determinative in setting their agenda and coming up with workable solutions. She will outline the steps in a mediation and demonstrate the opening statement, share her experiences completing NYPI trainings and apprenticeships, and provide an overview of NYPI's various programs (custody and co-parenting, special ed, civil court, conflict coaching, etc.).

A second part to this series, focusing on specific mediation techniques, will be presented during the next Wagner Brainery on November 28.

11:30am-12:00pm

Title: Building Talent by Leveraging Student Workers

Presenter: Surabhi Lal

Description: The Office of Career Services (OCS) recently revamped the Project Assistant role (an hourly student position) to be one that benefits the operations of the office, as well as contributes to students' learning. Surabhi will share how OCS went about rethinking the role, integrating the Project Assistants into the OCS team, and the expectations that were set.
