Climate Solutions From and For the Amazon Region: Radical Collaboration Based on Science, Local Knowledge and Networks

Tuesday, September 23, 9:00am–10:30am, NYU Wagner Main Event Space

The Amazon stands at the edge of its tipping point, with the convergence of deforestation, fire, and climate change risks undermining its role as a global climate regulator. In the months leading up to a critical COP in the region itself, it becomes essential to highlight both the science that warns of systemic collapse and the solutions that can redirect the region’s trajectory.

The event will bring scientists, local leaders and policymakers together to bridge science, practice, and policy. It will consist of a high-level panel and debate addressing the following guiding issues: What does the most recent science reveal about Amazon tipping points, and what are the global implications of forest loss and recurrent fires?

Mass Transit & Climate Change: Capital Programs

Thursday, September 25, 9:00am–10:30am, NYU Wagner Main Event Space

Join the NYU Rudin Center for Transportation for a special Climate Week NYC event exploring the essential role of mass transit in combating climate change. Transportation is the nation’s largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, responsible for about 28% of the U.S. total. While public transit contributes only a small share, it is essential for enabling mode shift and reducing car dependency. At the same time, improving emissions and air quality across all transportation modes—including transit itself—is crucial to building climate resilience. This year’s program will spotlight the environmental benefits of major capital projects, including the Second Avenue Subway extension and the Interborough Express (IBX), highlighting how infrastructure investment drives sustainability. This gathering will bring together leading voices in transportation, climate policy, and urban planning to advance the conversation around transit as a climate solution.

Speakers will share lessons from successful and upcoming collaborations, that leverage and deploy much needed financing for cross-cutting and measurable impact in Large Ocean States. Framed around the ocean–climate–biodiversity nexus, the event will showcase how meaningful investment into SIDS can deliver globally significant results for people, nature, and the global climate. A reception will follow from 6:00–7:00pm.
