What were your takeaways from this conference/case competition?
The conference is a one-day experience that is dedicated to helping women rise up at work, whether that’s navigating how to climb up the career ladder or negotiating your salary as a woman. The panel discussions, fireside chats, and workshops were really effective and definitely taught me skills that I needed to get ahead in my career.
How will your participation in this conference/case competition support your professional development?
One of my favorite panel sessions was “Hack the Interview: Get Hired!” Three things to focus on while interviewing are “fit, interest, and potential.” Fit is your values, strengths and personality aligning with the employer's; interest is how you effectively show your interest in the company, the role, and mobility; and potential is the experience, transferable skills, and the ability to stretch. Another panel that I really enjoyed was “Negotiate Your Worth”. 20% of women do not negotiate their salary and leave a lot of money on the table over the course of their careers.
What are some next steps or action items this conference/case competition inspired?
As a graduate student, some of the things you want to consider as you begin your job search is “culture through content and connections.” Finding the right company or organization is important. When you’re thinking about negotiation, reframe it as an opportunity. One of the key takeaways from this session was to do your research and understand market value.
