Association of Latinx Students and Allies in Public Service (ALAS)
Mission
ALAS enhances the NYU Wagner experience by organizing events that are professionally and culturally relevant to students who identify as part of the Latinx diaspora. Rooted in the values of culture, familia, and social justice, we hold vital space for our community to explore issues at the intersection of identity, professional advancement, and social change.
Vision
To be a consistent space for NYU Wagner’s Latinx students to build relationships, practice solidarity, and imagine a better future for our communities.
Values
Culture
Recognizing that la cultura cura (culture heals), we embrace the spectrum of lived experiences that span Latinidad. Through this celebration of our differences and commonalities, we deepen our understanding of one another and cultivate a spirit that uplifts Latinx voices.
Familia
With relationships rooted in empathy, inclusion, and a commitment to uplifting one another, we practice solidarity to honor both our individual challenges and shared struggle. Whether you're from New York, la Patagonia, or anywhere in between, we cultivate a bond that transcends individualism, embracing the strength of our unity as a familia Latina.
Social Justice
Our work as Latine change-makers exists within an environment of oppressive institutions and inequitable systems that marginalize our communities. We are committed to reimagining and transforming the status quo to build a more socially just world.
Membership
The ALAS membership is open to all the entire NYU and Wagner community. Our membership is comprised of individuals who proclaim their self-identity to be Latinx, Latino(a), Latin-American, and/or Hispanic, as well as allies interested in issues related to Latin America and the Caribbean.
