Visa Requirements

NYU and Wagner provide comprehensive information and advising on the process of getting and maintaining your visa for your studies at Wagner.  Review the information below on your legal and academic requirements to maintain your visa.

Understand Your Visa Requirements

In liaison with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, NYU’s Office for Global Services (OGS) coordinates services for F-1 and J-1 international students, scholars, and their dependents, including information related to I-20s, visa applications, employment, and tax status. OGS provides the most current and accurate information regarding U.S. government regulations governing immigration issues and your visa. It is your responsibility to obtain, understand, and abide by U.S. government regulations governing your status while in the U.S. It is also your responsibility to keep your F-1/J-1 status legal and valid throughout the duration of your studies in the US.

The OGS office is located 383 Lafayette Street. For more information regarding the services of OGS, visit the comprehensive OGS website, call 212-998-4720 or email ogs@nyu.edu.

Student Visa & Immigration

Full-time Enrollment Required

Federal regulation requires that F-1 and J-1 visa students maintain full-time status each semester.

Students who register for 12 credits in each of their first two semesters are enrolled full time.  You can enroll in 9 credits in your first two semesters, but this has implications for your degree completion timeline and should be discussed with a Student Services Program Advisor in advance.

Changing Enrollment Status

US law requires you to notify the Office of Global Services if anything changes with your academic program or immigration status. Changes include changing your current visa status to F-1/J-1, renewing your visa, regaining your status, replacing lost or stolen immigration documents, changing your current immigration status if you have been approved for a new status and need to end your F-1/J-1 record with NYU.
