UNPAID INTERNSHIPS AND VOLUNTEER WORK
As an international student, you're eligible to work in unpaid internships and serve as an unpaid volunteer.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT (PER)
To ensure you’re prepared for your post-graduate career, NYU Wagner requires all MPA and MUP students to fulfill the Professional Experience Requirement (PER).
CURRICULAR PRACTICAL TRAINING (CPT)
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows international students to accept paid off-campus employment that is relevant and required for the student's degree.
OPTIONAL PRACTICAL TRAINING (OPT)
Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows international students to take on additional relevant employment that is directly related to their major field of study.
While studying at NYU Wagner, and after graduation, you'll have access to the Office of Career Services' (OCS) rich resources—everything you'll need to fine-tune your career vision, strategically plan your time at school, and build a public service career in which you can make the most impact.
CAREER ADVISEMENT SESSIONS
Career services staff are available to meet with you for 30-minute, one-on-one advising appointments to answer your questions and discuss your career next steps.
In addition to Wagner's Office of Career Services, you will have access to the NYU Wasserman Center which provides career support, advising, and resources to all NYU students.

NYU WAGNER CAREER DIRECTORY
You can use the NYU Wagner Career Directory - an online database of public service employment opportunities - to search and apply for positions, RSVP to OCS events, and browse employer profiles.
In this portal, NYU Wagner has partnered with Devex to provide you a Devex Career Account at no charge. Devex is a media platform for the global development community with access to news, business intelligence, funding, and career opportunities.
HANDSHAKE (WASSERMAN)
Handshake is the NYU Wasserman's career portal where you find jobs, explore career resources, and register for events.
In this portal, you can also locate the GoinGlobal resource which features an annual H1-B employer report as well as country-specific career development guidance and networking/interview resources. Login to Handshake >Career Center > Resources.

WayUp is a career platform for short-term and temporary positions for on-campus employment.
RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP (RA)
Research Assistantship (RA) positions are hired by Wagner's research centers and institutes. RA opportunities are announced as they become available, typically at the end of summer or start of each semester.
TEACHING ASSISTANT (TA)
Another potential role for continuing students is Teaching Assistant (TA). TAs are selected each semester by faculty from among students who have completed their course with a strong performance record.

NYU Wagner's Office of Career Services hosts a wide variety of workshops, employer information sessions, career expos, panel discussions, and more throughout the year.
HOW-TO GUIDES
NYU Wagner's Office of Career Services has created a variety of guides to assist students and alumni in the career planning process, including resume writing, cover letter writing, interviewing, negotiating offers, and more.
INTERNSHIP & CONFERENCE FUNDING
Funding opportunities are available for students who are pursuing unpaid internships or seeking financial assistance to attend professional conferences.
COMPOSING YOUR CAREER (NONCR-GP 108)
Throughout this four-session workshop, you will reflect, analyze, and explore frameworks and pathways that align with your professional goals. You will leave with an action plan and specific strategies for how to advance your public service career. Register via Albert.
If you plan to work as an international student, you will be required to apply for a Social Security Number and pay taxes. Learn how to obtain a Social Security Number and an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.
